Collaborations and Fortnite go hand in hand these days, with there seemingly being multiple crossover skins in the Item Shop at any one time. But, this may be the first time that we have seen an original cosmetic receive collaborative branding. Despite the promotional image, Boss Obsidian is a brand new original character and Epic Games accidentally leaked it early.
Epic Games accidentally posted an image of the new Boss Obsidian skin to its Fortnite social media platforms before swiftly deleting it. The original post read “Take the journey into the altitude as Boss Obsidian. Just ignoring you-know-who at this point so check out this new Outfit in the shop.”
With it being posted and then deleted, it is likely that the social media manager got the dates mixed up and scheduled it too early. Although no date has been given for the skin’s release, we will probably see Boss Obsidian come to Fortnite as soon as the next Item Shop rotation later tonight.
One interesting note is that, despite the Deadpool graffiti, Boss Obsidian is not a collaboration skin and isn’t associated with the Marvel IP, instead it is an original character that appears to be based on the Black Knight outfit from Chapter 1 Season 2, which has been the base of multiple cosmetics over the years.
Despite not being affiliated with Marvel, it is clear that Epic Games is using this time to heavily promote the recently released Deadpool & Wolverine movie, which includes brand new skins for the two legendary Marvel characters. This comes just weeks before the start of the upcoming Marvel-themed Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4. So far, we know that Doctor Doom is set to return to the game, but it is unclear which other characters will be joining the villain.
