As the hype train for the next Call of Duty starts to leave the station, a number of influencers have been given clues that appear to point towards the return of the Slide Cancel movement mechanic in the presumed Modern Warfare 3.
A number of Call of Duty content creators have recently received packages from Activision in the lead-up to the next game’s launch announcement, which is believed to be happening in the very near future as part of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone Season 5. As fan Twitter account Modern Warzone notes, these include Faze team member & streamer Swagg.
Posting on social media a video of their care package, it included a pair of slides (slip-on slippers), a mysterious can and a cell phone. While they might seem unrelated on a first glance, a number of community members believe these items together form a coded message: ‘slide’ ‘can’ and ‘cell’ – putting the three words together to make Slide Cancel.
If accurate, this appears to point towards the return of the slide cancel move mechanic in Modern Warfare 3. For those not in the know, slide cancelling is the method of traversing quickly around the map by heading into a slide, and then cancelling the animation before it ends to pop immediately into a gun-ready position. While it was possible to slide cancel in Warzone 2, players had to manually set up their controls in a specific way, and it wasn’t always easy to pull off.
If what the community has discovered is true, it could point towards a much easier, officially supported way to slide cancel in Modern Warfare 3 – which would please many members of the community who like to use this method. At the time of writing, there’s been no confirmation if the community’s detective work is correct yet, however, so we’ll have to wait and see if this bares out. But for now, we’ll have to take this information with a pinch of salt.
We’re expecting to hear more about Call of Duty 2023 very soon, with some whispers indicating the in-game event may be announced later this week. We’ll keep our eye on things, but so far we’ve already seen a Modern Warfare 3 logo on an energy drink and a promise of a formal reveal of the Modern Warfare 3 key art coming later this week from the official Twitter account. As for the Modern Warfare 3 release date, rest assured we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
