Remedy Entertainment has had a successful year capped off by the release of the phenomenal Alan Wake 2. Following rave reviews of the survival horror masterpiece, the developer has provided an update on their future projects currently in development. This update shares that the anticipated Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes have progressed into the ‘production readiness stage’.

Alan Wake 2 developer, Remedy Entertainment, was responsible for the first two Max Payne video games, meanwhile, Rockstar developed Max Payne 3. There are no plans for a fourth installment to come out, but it’s exciting that the series’ beloved first two games are coming to modern platforms. And, instead of remasters with HD textures and slightly better audio, the two games are being fully remade into one epic singular title.

Max Payne remakes have progressed into the ‘production readiness stage’

Following the release of Alan Wake 2, developer Remedy Entertainment has shared their PLC Q3 2023 to lay the foundation for the future. Talking about games currently in development, the studio’s CEO, Tero Virtala, says the following about the Max Payne remakes:

‘Max Payne 1&2 remake progressed into the production readiness stage. We have gained clarity on the style and scope of the game, and we have an exceptionally well-organized team working on it. With these accomplishments, we are excited about the project and its future success.’

The Max Payne remakes were first announced in 2022 with Remedy entering an agreement with Rockstar to remake the first two games. Back in 2001 and 2003, the Max Payne developer was Remedy Entertainment, meanwhile, Rockstar was the publisher. The two games will be combined into a singular title planned to be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S using the Northlight game engine. Rockstar is financing the game’s development budget, and Remedy has a royalty opportunity after Rockstar recoups its development and other costs for distributing and publishing.

There is no shared targeted release window for the game, but you simply shouldn’t expect it for many years. Aside from remakes for Max Payne, Remedy is also working on Control 2 which has just entered the proof-of-concept stage. While neither of these projects will come out anytime soon, you can enjoy Alan Wake 2 right now. It stars Alan Wake and Saga Anderson in terrifying and creative missions, and it’s easily one of the best games of 2023.
