Call of Duty Black Ops 6 players are experiencing crashes during the game’s single-player campaign. Despite the mode’s single-player nature, its online-only requirement has resulted in many players unable to experience the game’s blockbuster story mode.
The bizzare decision from Acitivsion to make the game ‘always online’ has meant that some parts, traditionally available offline, are now being affected by unstable servers. With users flooding servers on launch to play the game’s suite of multiplayer modes, single-player gamers are also suffering with many unable to make their way through the game’s campaign length.
Brain dead Black Ops 6
Players on the Call of Duty subreddit have not taken kindly to the game’s internet requirements, referred to the decision to be always online as ‘brain dead’. However, according to developer Treyarch, there is a valid reason for it.
Black Ops 6 uses a feature called ‘texture streaming’, which allows for higher quality visuals without taking up overall storage space. As per to the official website, the texture streaming tech was actually used in the last Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3, but is being deployed more aggressively in Black Ops 6.
“We can cycle can cycle content that is less frequently used by players to a streaming cache, avoiding the need to download it directly to your device’s storage. Going forward, more content will be included in this cache,” the blog post reads.
Texture streaming was first introduced in the series in a November 2020 update. Back then, you were able to control bandwidth usage and set a daily cap through the Options menu. Today, the ability to turn off the mode has been removed completely.
To make matters more confusing, the campaign can be played without Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus subscriptions, providing your console is hooked up to the internet. The VideoGamer team has the game and can confirm at the time of writing there is no way to play the single-player mode without being online.
The Call of Duty series has been praised for its triple threat of multiplayer, zombies and a blockbuster campaign, but seeing the latter kneecapped by silly internet requirements is painful to say the least.
Despite these qualms, Black Ops 6 has launched to positive user reviews, with a ‘mostly positive’ sentiment on Steam.
