Ascendant Studios has offered fans a glimpse at the first gameplay for upcoming space shooter Immortals of Aveum by way of a new trailer.
Following the game’s initial reveal last week, we were wondering how the game itself would actually play – and whether it would indeed be, as it appeared, something akin to a single-player Destiny. Now, having seen the spell-based combat in action, we can say it’s more akin to something like Doom, only a lot less gorier – but with similarly intense arena-based stand-offs against waves of enemies and some fun looking traversal with what appears to be a kind of magic-whip.
The footage is from the point of view of Jak, the player character, who has the ability to wield magic in three forms – Force in blue, Chaos in red and Life in green. As you can see, you’ll be using all three together to fight foes who are also imbued with magic – for example, shielding yourself from an attack with Force before following it up with an intense blast using Chaos.
It looks like you won’t always be fighting alone either, as the footage also shows some helpful NPCs that’ll seemingly join you for some of these intense battles. You’ll be able to combine your magic with theirs to help unleash effective combo-like attacks by the looks – with your friend keeping a baddie at bay with Life magic while you use a magic whip to hook onto specific points around the battlefield to flank the enemy from behind.
Magic won’t be exclusively used for combat, as we’re shown what looks to be some environmental puzzling requiring you to refract different coloured blocks to make progress. In this case, the progress manifests as the awakening of a tougher enemy reminiscent of a Sentinel from X-Men – complete with face-beam – that you’ll have to take down to proceed, but it’s good to see there’ll be some puzzles to add variety to the gameplay too.
Finally, the trailer also gives us a brief look at the game’s gear system – where you’ll be able to equip sigils, totems, rings and bracers which will all effect your stats in different ways, with items themselves also appearing to have slots to enhance them further still. Presumably, we’ll get more detail on that down the line.
