Sony is releasing another remaster and this time it’s for the excellent Horizon Zero Dawn. PlayStation has seen its fair share of remasters for still visually stunning games such as Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2, but the good news is that existing owners can upgrade for just £10. Here you will find the release date and time countdown for when Horizon Zero Dawn remastered will come out, and you will also discover how to upgrade on PS5 and PC for Steam.

In our original Horizon Zero Dawn review, we praised the character of Aloy along with the stellar gameplay and absolutely gorgeous visuals. The developer has recently shut down claims that the PS4 original looks better than the upcoming remaster, and fans of Aloy also have the release of LEGO Horizon Adventures to look forward to very soon in November.

While we cannot wait for the LEGO spin-off to come out, before then we are able to return to Aloy’s first adventure with Horizon Zero Dawn remastered. The release date and time countdown is nearly over, and existing owners on PS5 and PC Steam will be able to upgrade.

Horizon Zero Dawn remastered release date

The release date for Horizon Zero Dawn remastered is October 31st. Its existence was unearthed by an ESRB rating before Sony’s official reveal.

It faces stiff competition as it is coming out on the same day as Dragon Age The Veilguard. There has also been some criticism over whether a remaster is necessary as the 2017 original that launched on PS4 still looks breathtaking and plays perfectly well.

When does Horizon Zero Dawn remastered come out?

The release time for when Horizon Zero Dawn remastered will come out on PS5 is 9PM PT on October 30th, as well as 12AM ET/12AM GMT on October 31st.

As shared by the PSN store countdown, it is a local midnight release on PS5 consoles. As for Steam, it should come out at 9AM PT/12PM ET/4PM GMT on October 31st. These launch hours come courtesy of the Steam countdown which said the game will unlock in approximately one day and seven hours as of 8AM GMT on October 30th.

Countdown

Below is a countdown to the remaster’s launch on PlayStation:

Differences explained

There are some differences included in the remaster besides the obvious of improved 4K visuals. Per Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement, there is “over 10 hours of re-recorded conversation, mocap and countless graphical improvements that bring the game to same visual fidelity as its critically acclaimed sequel Horizon Forbidden West”.

Character models, animation, textures, and lighting have all been improved, and the audio has been enhanced too with the “revamped sound mix now supporting PS5 Tempest 3D Audio Tech for higher-order ambisonics and Atmos rendering for an immersive soundscape”.

There is also haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for the PS5 DualSense controller, and there will be PS5 Pro support for when the console launches in November. In addition, accessibility features from Forbidden West have been transferred over including “remappable controls, haptic cues, and various assist toggles”.

Lastly, you will be able to carry over your save from the 2017 original, and the PC version includes trophy support.

How to upgrade

If you own the 2017 original on PS5 or PC, you will be able to upgrade to the remaster for just £10. For those who possess a digital copy of the PS4 version and now own a PS5, simply follow the below steps to upgrade:

  • Open the PSN store on PS5
  • Search and select Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Select the three dots
  • Click View this Product
  • Buy the remaster for £10

If you own a physical copy of Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4, you will only be able to upgrade if you have a PS5 with a disc drive. Assuming this is the case, you need to insert the disc into your PS5 and upgrade.

It’s important to note that only people who own a digital edition of the original Horizon Zero Dawn can pre-order the remaster on PS5. In addition, those who own a disc copy will need to insert the disc to play the remaster, and “PS4 game disc owners who buy the PS5 Digital Edition disc-free console will not be able to access the upgrade offer”.

As for PC, existing owners of the original on Steam or the Epic Games store will be able to upgrade for £10, too. However, you will need a PSN account. If you do not own the original or are unable to upgrade, the remaster costs £44.99.
