Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has obtained “full ownership” of Death Stranding, giving the creator free reign of the franchise’s future. Following a surprise Xbox port of the game for Series X and Series S, Sony Interactive Entertainment has no hold on the Death Stranding IP.
Kojima owns Death Stranding
In a press release from Kojima Productions, it was confirmed that Death Stranding is now firmly in the hands of the development studio. While the upcoming sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is still a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive, this means an Xbox port of the new game is extremely likely in the future.
Kojima Productions is planning a focus on bringing the franchise to more platforms and audiences than ever before. Prior to the Xbox port’s release earlier today, the original Death Stranding was available on PS4, PS5, PC, MacOS and iPhone. The game also launched on Amazon Luna today.
Marking the game’s fifth anniversary, Kojima’s ownership over the video game franchise means that upcoming projects like the in-development A24 movie can be created without PlayStation interference.
Kojima’s future
Alongside the continued future of Death Stranding with its upcoming movie and sequel in development, Hideo Kojima’s development studio is also working on other projects.
For example, the game studio is working on OD, an Xbox exclusive horror game starring IT and Dungeons and Dragons actor Sophia Lillis. The studio is also in the early stages of development of Physint, a stealth-action spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.
