Arrowhead have clarified a misunderstanding regarding Helldivers 3 after the studio’s CEO confirmed a massive feature planned for their “next” game after Helldivers 2. Previously, Arrowhead have discussed wanting Helldivers 2 to live for up to 10-years, but there are limitations due to old tech and thus some fan-requested features will never be implemented. It’s well documented that the technology used for HD2 is very old and limiting, which is partly to blame for all the “crippling technical debt” resulting in horrific performance and poor optimization. While this old tech is restricting what Arrowhead can do with HD2, the good news is that the developer is already planning their next game.
Helldivers 2 CEO confirms first feature for “next” game, but it isn’t Helldivers 3
As relayed by the official Helldivers subreddit, on Discord, Arrowhead CEO, Shams Jorjani, was asked if there are any plans to introduce a “social hub space station,” with the user specifically pointing to “the tower in Destiny” as an example.
Unfortunately, the introduction of such a feature isn’t possible for HD2, but, at the very least, Jorjani confirmed “It’s on the feature list for the next one”. Naturally, everyone ran away with this comment under the impression that Jorjani was referring to the next Helldivers.
However, in the comments on Reddit, the CEO, with the username BigKahuna_AGS, clarified, “This was about our next game. Not HD3”.
As for what we know about Arrowhead’s next game, Jorjani has previously stated that it will be completely independent of PlayStation and will thus “100% be funded” by themselves. In addition, the CEO has declared that the studio will not repeat a lot of “baaaaad” mistakes made with HD2. This includes planning to start “preproduction with a small team”.
Alas, this is all we know about the mysterious next game from Arrowhead, and it’s admittedly not a lot. Regarding Helldivers 3, don’t expect that to happen anytime soon. Arrowhead have previously discussed wanting to turn HD2 into Helldivers 3 with bags of content over the next 10-years, but the feasibility of this remains to be seen because of tech limitations resulting in severe performance problems with every significant update.
