The new Helldivers 2 Borderline Justice Warbond is clearly inspired by the wild west and cowboys. While Arrowhead have said players can look and feel like a “space cowboy” by donning the new armor and weapons, some players wish Arrowhead would’ve added cowboy hats. In response, the Helldivers 2 CCO has said the developer won’t add “hats on helmets,” despite this having already happened with a previous Warbond.
Helldivers 2 CCO says Arrowhead won’t add “hats on helmets”
Following the release of the Helldivers 2 Borderline Justice Warbond, some HD2 players have been asking Arrowhead for cowboy hats. Despite being on a break from development, Arrowhead CCO, Johan Pilestedt, replied to the request on X and said, “I agree that it would be awesome, but I think it would break the fantasy of helldivers…. people don’t wear hats on helmets”.
Reacting to Pilestedt’s response, players on Reddit pointed out that Arrowhead already added hats on helmets before with the Viper Commandos Warbond. This is an exception to the rule, but it’s still proof against Pilestedt’s claim.
Not wanting to “break the fantasy of helldivers” is an understandable stance, and it’s why Arrowhead have previously stated they don’t want to crossover with any IP just because it’s a big franchise such as Star Wars.
However, on Reddit, quite a few players disagree with Pilestedt’s stance about the cowboy hats. As stated by one user, “Piles, my friend, one of the armors is just a leather jacket with a big ol’ sheriff woody star on it, a full on bullet bandolier belt with a six shooter holster, and riding boots with spurs. There is absolutely no more room left to say anything about breaking the fantasy or ruining the immersion”.
Another comment said, “The fantasy is already broken with the sheriff’s clothes. At least break it like you should instead of just 2/3rds of it”. Some argued that the hat in the Viper Commandos Warbond is appropriate because it’s miltary, but to this another user pointed out, “Brim hats are very military, just depends on country and time in history”.
The disappointment in not getting cowboy hats is understandable, but the armor in the Borderline Justice Warbond still looks incredible, and the weapons are amazing, too. Hopefully Arrowhead will show some more leniency in the future, but they do have a tightrope to balance in wanting to deliver content that is fun and still feels thematically appropriate.
