Maintaining goodwill with the player base is incredibly important for any game and it doesn’t take much to erode it. Recently, we have seen the Helldivers 2 community and development team clash on Discord in numerous instances. But, it looks like that is changing now as the team has been staying away from Discord and it seems to be for the better.
Alexus, a developer at Arrowhead Game Studios found themselves in hot water with the Helldivers 2 community last month after taking to Discord to defend the recent weapon nerfs that were met with criticism due to the reactionary nature of not allowing any weapon to be considered ‘overpowered.
Recently, the developer once again took to Discord to say that they made the wrong choice with their approach and that the new blog post that followed the 01.000.400 update was a great way to explain changes made in the patch.
“We’re not micromanaged by our CCO. C-level executives have more important things to do. I worked on this patch with the rest of the team, as usual, on both balance and new weapons. I’ve never been in charge of game balance decisions, I’m a mere game designer and it’s always been a team effort. Our balance philosophy stays the same though, turns out we just needed more time to cook!
I’ll take the L for the Eruptor situation though, I shouldn’t have rushed to Discord with the first knee-jerk reaction. I feel like the new blog posts format is much better at getting our point across, so I’ll refrain from public discussions to avoid saying something stupid again.”
The blog post was a great addition and having a more structured explanation that is approved by Pilestedt is the way to go to help to continue to rebuild good will in the community. This previous situation wasn’t the first time the team and community clashed online and it has always led to negative backlash which can only tarnish the reputation of Helldivers 2 and drive players away.
But, it looks like Arrowhead Game Studios is turning the game around with plenty of new content in the game including the 01.000.402 hotfix and Viper Commandos Warbond. With so much change in the game, it can be difficult to keep up.
