Helldivers 2 has a lot of enemies for Super Earth soldiers to fight. There are bugs, Automatons that can now fly, and there are also the infamous Illuminate. The army of squids is arguably humanity’s greatest rival, and there will be more joining the battlefield in the future. While Arrowhead are tight-lipped about what’s to come, a Helldivers 2 developer has admitted an enemy of the Illuminate was “bulls*** game design” that the studio “gotta learn from”.

On the Helldivers Discord, QA lead, Jojo, was asked, “what’s the DEV team’s stance on making the game more difficult? Like how do you guys wanna do it?”.
Difficulty is always a hot topic amongst the HD2 community, with fans often battling with arguments that the game is too easy or too hard. Often in the case of arguing the game is too challenging, players call for certain enemies to receive nerfs.
In response to the query, Jojo said, “Not a designer, but I will always personally object to ‘bulls***’ game design. The Leviathan was not fun for a bit there. Gotta learn from that”.
This response suggests that, in regard to game difficulty, Arrowhead don’t want to implement a challenge by unleashing enemies that are unfair to players. Fortunately, the Leviathan is much better after receiving nerfs in update 01.003.104, which stopped them from ragdolling players while also adjusting their spawn rates and adding a one second delay between shots.
It’s good that Arrowhead recognise the original design of the Levithan was “bulls***,” and that they intend to learn from it. This will hopefully result in a better first impression when leaked Illuminate enemies such as a “sniper and close-range assassin,” the returning Illusionist, and essentially ghosts get added to the battlefield.
