If you don’t own a 4K TV, “Scorpio is not going to do anything for you,” Xbox head Phil Spencer has said, advising 1080p TV owners to buy an Xbox One S instead.
Talking to Eurogamer about the reasons why fans should pick up an Xbox One S now knowing that Scorpio is just over a year away, Spencer asked the interviewer: “What TV do you have?”
“A standard 1080p TV,” the interviewer replied.
“Then you should buy this box [Xbox One S], because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you,” Spencer said. “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don’t have a 4K TV, the benefit we’ve designed for, you’re not going to see. Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you.”

Spencer’s reply suggests that games running on Scorpio will not look or perform any better than on Xbox One, bar the fact they run at a native 4K resolution. Microsoft has previously said that all Xbox One games will run on Scorpio, and that Scorpio will not receive any exclusive games.
The messaging conflicts, however, with an earlier statement from Spencer, who said previously that games currently running at a dynamic resolution on Xbox One will benefit from a more consistent image quality on Scorpio. That’s at least one advantage 1080p players will have over the standard Xbox One.
Sony, meanwhile, has said that games will play “an awful lot prettier” on its high-end PS4, PlayStation Neo, although it isn’t yet clear whether they are targeting a native 4K output like Microsoft.
“On a console to console experience, when we designed Scorpio and we said 4K console, we looked at games that are running at, let’s say 1080p 60 on an Xbox One, and said we want that same game to be able to run at 4K 60 on a Scorpio,” Spencer continued later in the interview. We looked at the design of the games we had on Xbox One today and said, if we increase the resolution and maintain the framerate we have, could we hit that?”
