Niantic Labs and Warner Bros have announced that mobile AR adventure Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is to close down.
An announcement on the game’s website broke the news that the game will officially shut down on January 31, 2022. Meanwhile, the relevant parties will remove the game from the App Store, Google Play etc by December 6 2021. In-game purchases will also be disabled at this time.
The statement didn’t reveal a specific reason for the closure. It read: “When we launched Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, our vision was to allow players to experience the wizarding world right in their real-world surroundings as they stepped outside and explored their neighborhoods. Over the years, millions of witches and wizards around the globe have embarked on real-world adventures, coming together to keep magic hidden safe within the wizarding world while joining forces to take on The Unforgivable.”
Those players still remaining with the game can expect some gameplay changes starting this week. Some of these include increased rewards, potion brew times slashed, daily caps on gifts removed and more. The Niantic team will also activate the game’s remaining events over the coming weeks to round out the Calamity storyline.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was a mobile game launched in 2019 that used AR in a similar fashion to Niantic’s other hit, Pokémon Go. Players could walk around real world locations, collecting potion ingredients and battling with magical creatures and characters. While it wouldn’t likely ever reach Pokémon Go levels of success. It’s probably safe to assume the COVID-19 pandemic dealt the game a heavy blow.
It appears Niantic meanwhile will be shifting their resources to the newly released Pikmin Bloom, which launched earlier this week.
