Grand Theft Auto 5 has been selling like hotcakes since it made its debut on PlayStation 3 and Xbox One back in 2013, so it should come as no surprise that it’s now been labelled the highest-grossing entertainment product ever. As in, of all time. Bigger than Avatar, bigger than Ed Sheeran, and bigger than, well, anything.

That’s according to a report on MarketWatch, which states that, with over 90 million copies sold worldwide and a staggering $6 billion in revenue generated since release, the crime caper now stands as the ‘most financially successful media title of all time.’ This includes not only video games, but (presumably) also movies, music, and books.

What isn’t quite clear is whether or not the figure accounts for cash brought in by GTA 5 purchases or additional revenue generated by GTA Online transactions. While the milestone is absolutely huge, it’s not all that surprising; Grand Theft Auto is a major brand and the latest game is available on two generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, plus PC.

In the UK, GTA 5 has remained a constant presence in the upper reaches of the chart and last year alone managed to flog over one million copies. GTA Online meanwhile continues to prove a huge success and has been a huge money maker for publisher Take-Two, with fresh updates continuing on a weekly basis.
