Here’s what we know so far about God of War: Ragnarok on PC.
Will God of War: Ragnarok come to PC?
The last game, God of War, released in 2018 to rave reviews on Sony’s PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles. Despite this being assumed as a PS exclusive for some time, God of War arrived on the PC in January 2022.
Game director Cory Barlog and Santa Monica Studio lead UX designer Mila Pavlin shared a major driver for porting the game to PC, was that it opened God of War up to a new audience, making it more accessible.
In the interview with IGN, Pavlin said the PC port laid the ‘groundwork’ for projects moving forward.
“We definitely wanted to make sure that we were building the groundwork for that kind of controller customization and keyboard customization for the future because making sure that you have the underlying base layer in the code is probably the most important thing,” she said.
The PC version brought a load of improvements to the game, including Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and widescreen support.
Textures, shadows, screen space reflections, GTAO and SSDO and much more were all added. Performance also increased from a capped 30 FPS on PS4 and PS4 Pro to far higher framerates, 60 or above, on PC.
When we look at the God of War Ragnarok graphics modes on both the last gen an current gen consoles, we get an idea of how scalable the technology powering the game is. PS5 can run at native 4K at 30 FPS if you’re opting to favour quality, dipping down to 1440p for a targeted 60 FPS in Performance Mode. On the other end of the spectrum, PS4 renders a 1080p image at serviceable 30 FPS.
One would assume that should the PC version come out for Ragnarok, we’ll see 60 FPS at native 4K, as well as improved textures et al. that we saw in the original. This is just speculation but seems to make most sense now the graphics modes have been revealed.

Unsurprisingly, when the original God of War did arrive on PC, it went down very well, achieving multiple 10/10 Steam scores and an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ user score on the platform. Should Ragnarok ever be released on PC, we are certain the same response would happen again.
Sadly, nothing has been confirmed yet. But with more Sony games making their way on to PC, most recently Spider-Man Miles Morales, and the fact that the original God of War eventually got a PC port, we remain positive Ragnarok will come to PC.
Will God of War Ragnarok come to Steam?
The previous God of War eventually ended up on Steam, so if Ragnarok does to PC, it will be on Steam. Of course, this is just speculation for the time being.
However PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst has indicated that many fans waiting for the game to come to PC may be in for a bit of a wait.
Speaking to Julien Chieze on his YouTube channel, Hulst said “I think, going forward we’ll see at least a year between releases on the PlayStation and the PC platform. Possibly with the exception of live service games.”
Alas, as God of War: Ragnarok almost certainly isn’t a live service game, it seems it’ll be at least late 2023 before we do see God of War: Ragnarok on PC.
In the meantime, if you want the best looking version of God of War: Ragnarok, then you’ll be wanting a PS5. Santa Monica Studios has now revealed a wealth of graphical options for the game on console.
