After almost seven years of success, it’s hard to doubt that Fortnite will have a bright future. The game has been breaking records left and right, and Epic Games has big plans for it. Tim Sweeney, the company’s CEO, recently revealed a couple of exciting things coming to Fortnite. These new additions will drastically improve the game and make it even more fun to play.
Sweeney had an interview with Matthew Ball, another CEO and Metaverse enthusiast. During it, he talked about Fortnite, Unreal Engine, technology, and much more. While the interview had lots of interesting bits, maybe the most interesting part is the future of Fortnite. According to Sweeney, the future will be very exciting.
Fortnite will get an open world in the future
Over the past few months, several Fortnite leakers shared the news of Epic Games developing an open-world mode. The game developer hasn’t revealed anything about this yet, although it might come with the release of Chapter 6 later this year. Tim Sweeney talked about an open world in his recent interview, saying that it’s the future of Fortnite.
“The reason we have Fortnite divided into a huge number of different islands, many built by third-party creators and some built by Epic, is because we don’t yet have the entire technology stack needed to robustly enable every creator to put their content together into a big, seamless open world if they wanted,” Sweeney shared.
The company’s CEO also revealed that these are not permanent things. “And so a lot of the things you see in there are not the permanent end state of what we see this medium being, but are just current crutches that we’re using to hobble by as we work towards the ultimate capabilities of the thing,” he added.
The businessman revealed that the biggest issue is the network model used by Unreal Engine. It’s quite outdated, but this is something that will change with the release of Unreal Engine 6. Unfortunately for Fortnite players, this version of the game engine will not come out in 2024. In fact, Considering that UE5 was launched in April 2022, the next major iteration may not see the light of the day until 2028.
Having an open world would certainly be a game-changer for Fortnite, and many players look forward to this. In addition, Fortnite will likely get 200-player lobbies with the release of Unreal Engine 6. With these two changes, it’s safe to say that the future of Fortnite is bright, and it will be interesting to see what other things Epic Games has planned for it.
