It seems Final Fantasy XVI won’t be making an appearance at this year’s Tokyo Game Show according to comments by the game’s producer Naoki Yoshida.

Speaking in a developer update video for MMO Final Fantasy XIV entitled The 7th 14-Hour Broadcast Yoshida was joined by Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro. While FF14 was obviously the main topic of the broadcast, the subject of FF16 did indeed come up and, as reported by Gematsu, Yoshida has said the scenario for the upcoming RPG is nearly complete, with voice recording in both Japanese and English in its final stages.

However, the other two gentlemen also pressed Yoshida on why information on the game, which was first announced last year, is still hard to come by and noted its absence from this year’s E3. Yoshida said “I’m not holding back more information just for the sake of it, but rather I want the next information to be something that will ‘convince everyone to buy the game.’ The visual quality is a given but battles, and other unannounced major features will be included, and I want to present it like “Bam!” So nothing new until I’m satisfied.”

Some further information comes thanks to a translation of part of the video from Twitter user Aitaikimochi during a humorous exchange between the three developers. Yoshida revealed that others within the company wanted to show something at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, due to take place this September 30. After some teasing from Taro, Yoshida clarified “Well then, it’s not going to be at TGS! Definitely not.” which was followed by Taro teasing that he may have to take matters into his own hands.

For now, it looks like fans will have to wait a little longer to hear more. The last infodump we got on Final Fantasy XVI revealed the game’s setting and heroes via its official website. We know it’ll star Clive, who along with his brother Joshua and confidant Jill. We also know it’ll be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but as for a release date — your guess is currently as good as ours.
