Capcom has confirmed that Dragon’s Dogma II, a follow up to the 2012 RPG, is officially in development.
Director Hideaki Itsuno confirmed the news during a broadcast marking ten years since the original game’s release. The sequel will use Capcom’s own RE Engine, used in all the recent Resi games since 2017’s Resident Evil 7. However, we’ve also seen the engine used in non-Resi games, Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter Rise and the upcoming Street Fighter 6.
Itsuno didn’t reveal too much in the way of additional details. However, we can be sure it’ll take some cues from the original Dragon’s Dogma. Presumably, this will include that game’s unique Pawn System. This mechanic allowed players to create their own NPCs who could be summoned into other players games to help them out.
Mr Itsuno also revealed a couple of members of the sequel’s development team, which include Daigo Ikeno and Kenichi Suzuki. Both of them worked on the previous game, so hopefully they’ll be able to guide the project with their veteran knowledge. At the moment we don’t know when we’ll get to see the results, however. Capcom didn’t announce platforms or a rough timeframe for release.
Hideaki Itsumo himself confirmed that Dragon’s Dogma II was under consideration back in 2019. However, the studio decided to do Devil May Cry 5 instead.
