Disney Infinity has been delayed until August 18 in North America and August 20 “overseas”, Disney has confirmed, after retailers called for a more opportunistic release window.

“The date became an issue in terms of [retailers] asking, ‘Is there a better opportunity here?'” Disney Interactive’s co-president John Pleasants told the New York Times.

The game had originally been due to launch on June 28, one week after Disney flick Monsters University hits the box office.

According to Pleasants, the revised release date will offer more time to ensure the game “really sings and pops” and, Disney hopes, provide a greater opportunity for the game to become popular amongst children returning to school for the new school year.

“We could deliver in June if we wanted to,” he continued. “Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops.”

Multiple studios are known to be involved in the development of Disney Infinity, which lets players jump into multiple Disney universes via standalone play sets, and play with new characters through the use of additional toys.

Alongside Avalanche Software, British studio Studio Gobo is developing the game’s Pirates of the Caribbean play set.
