Bungie has finally released a statement following the mass layoff the studio conducted this past week. In it, the Destiny 2 development team initially acknowledged the company’s sudden decision to downsize, noting that “this has been one of the most difficult weeks in our studio’s history.” Afterward, they would go on to outline their short-term goals as well as their plans for the upcoming expansion entitled The Final Shape, promising “an unforgettable Destiny experience.”
Bungie doubled down on their promise by stating that they “want to build something that will be regarded alongside the best games we’ve ever made.” The Destiny 2 developer would go on to list three of their most critically acclaimed expansions in Forsaken, The Witch Queen, and The Taken King as the “standard bearers” they aim to live up to and that they are focused on exceeding player expectations with the release of The Final Shape.
Bungie ended their announcement by saying: “In the weeks ahead, you’ll be hearing more from us about what’s next on the short-term horizon, beginning with our next season in late November. Afterwards, we’ll begin to unpack our team’s bigger, bolder, and brighter vision for The Final Shape, as well as the bridge we plan to build to take us out of this Darkness and into the Light.”
So, while it hasn’t officially been confirmed yet, Bungie’s alleged decision to delay the Destiny 2 The Final Shape release date following this latest wave of layoffs may prove true already, especially after being reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. With this in mind, if you’re waiting for more details on the next expansion, you may have to remain patient for a little while longer, as the developers may only provide more details in either late November or early December.
