The Destiny 2 2025 roadmap is firmly set-in-stone with Apollo scheduled to arrive in the summer. While Bungie have big plans for D2, they are also working on bringing back Marathon. The Destiny 2 developer has largely been quiet about their next game, but leaks have possibly revealed plans for micotransactions and more ahead of a rumored showcase in April.

Marathon leaks reveal plans for microtransactions

In addition to continuing work on Destiny 2, Bungie is developing Marathon. We haven’t heard much of anything about Marathon since its reveal back in 2023, but it will reportedly be shown off very soon.

According to Jeff Grubb, there are plans for a dedicated Marathon showcase in April. This is allegedly why the game was not part of Sony’s PlayStation State of Play for February 2025.

While we will have to wait and see if a showcase happens, there is a fresh leak online that possibly reveals details about the project. This comes courtesy of BungieLeaks via user Rocksiza in BungieLeaks’ Discord.

It’s clarified that the information is “at least a year old,” so fans are encouraged to take everything with a grain of salt as “some stuff might have been changed/reworked completely”.

The leaks claim to reveal details about maps. According to the leak, there will be “multiple maps with multiple sections”. It’s claimed that players spawn in a section of the map and “progress through each one while doing quests/other mechanics”. It’s said “one of these maps looks almost like a cross between Venus and parts of Io”.

Further details about maps claim that “the longer you stay in a map, the harder it’ll get”. The pro for this is that “your rewards will get better”. It’s said that “progression” is a core aspect of Marathon, and this is something that was “greatly praised in focus groups”.

There’s also the claim “Bungie is interested in competitive play, maybe even as a spectator E-Sport”. Then there’s details about microtransactions.

According to the leak, “Bungie is being sensitive to MTX, with a big emphasis on figuring out fair pricing”. It’s claimed Bungie are “well aware of the negative sentiment towards MTX, FOMO etc.,” but they are very set on “MTX/cosmetics, and figuring out how much people would pay for them”.

While microtransactions are to be expected, it is something that could rub players the wrong way due to reports Marathon will be a premium release instead of free-to-play. Remember that the above leak is not official, and that anything revealed could have changed during development.

For more Destiny 2, players are getting unreleased weapons no one is supposed to get yet, and leaks have revealed an “80% damage buff” perk and weapon pre-order bonus presumably for Apollo.
