Destiny developer Bungie is reportedly planning to release its upcoming Marathon reboot as a $40 purchase, following the same plan as PlayStation’s failed Concord.

Instead of going free-to-play like the current version of Destiny 2, players will have to pay to access the upcoming extraction shooter.

Bungie won’t make Marathon free-to-play

According to sources close to The Game Post, Bungie isn’t planning to release Marathon for free when it finally launches. While the game won’t ship at a full $70, the multiplayer-only game is still planned to release with a sizable entry fee.

The report claims that discussions are currently being had regarding the title’s launch price following the decimation of Concord. Shut down two weeks after launch, the PlayStation exclusive was an embarrassing release for the console platform just before the reveal of the PS5 Pro

According to the report, Marathon’s pricing is currently in flux. However, Bungie is keen to prove its worth with a premium release. In the past, every game from the studio has been released with an entry fee; even Destiny 2 used to be a premium experience.

Not a hero shooter

Alongside the news of Marathon’s price, the report also denies claims that the extraction shooter copies “hero shooter” elements from Overwatch and Valorant.

Instead, the game is set to be using a classic “class” system, similar to Team Fortress 2. Each class will have its own abilities, but they all play very differently from each other. However, the gameplay loop is modeled off games like Eacape from Tarkov and CoD’s DMZ mode.

Furthermore, the game is set to receive multiple maps for its Tarkov-style gameplay. At the time of writing, two maps are currently playable, but it’s unclear how many maps will be present in the game on launch.

With Destiny 2 starting a new arc with its brand-new expansion plans, Marathon is a bold new title from the company. However, with mass layoffs, project cancellations and a struggling industry, will the title pay off?
