Chris Pratt has been speaking on his performance as Mario in the upcoming Super Mario Bros movie, due next year.
Speaking to Variety, Pratt spoke of his experience so far voicing the iconic plumber. “I worked really closely with the directors and trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear. It’s an animated voiceover narrative. It’s not a live-action movie. I’m not gonna be wearing a plumber suit running all over. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.”
Aside from a curious compulsion to explain what a voice over role is, it’s largely what you’d expect from an actor promoting a future project. Pratt’s casting in the role, announced last September, has had a mixed response from fans to say the least. However, co-producer of the film Chris Meledandri has defended the decision, calling his work “phenomenal” in a recent interview.
Long-time Mario voice Charles Martinet will also have his voice in the flick in an as-yet undisclosed cameo. The film also stars Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach and Charlie Day as Luigi. Originally, the film was to arrive later this year. However, it was delayed to Spring 2023 this past April.
Earlier this month, a mysterious listing appeared for a Nintendo Studios. Whether that means we’ll be getting an entire Nintendo Cinematic Universe, we’ll have to wait and see. The Chris Pratt-fronted Super Mario Bros movie arrives in cinemas in Spring 2023.
