The Call of Duty community possesses some of the most creative minds in gaming thanks to their ability to inject fresh life into classic games in the form of user-created mods. Despite Activision remaining reluctant to allow mods into its annual releases, fans continue to create all kinds of additions to enhance the hugely popular Zombies mode from Black Ops 3.
As the Black Ops 6 cycle continues to roll on, fans of the old undead-slaying modes are starting to grow tired of the innovations introduced in recent releases. Modders continuing to create content have called upon Call of Duty’s publisher to release official mod tools to inject a huge variety of new items into the existing collection.
Black Ops 6 Zombies losing its appeal
Those releasing custom Zombies maps for older releases have already lost interest in Black Ops 6’s mode due to the move away from classic mechanics in favour of new features that detract from what made the mode so popular in the first place.
Zombies modder Gunoftruth believes official mod tools could be a game-changer for Call of Duty: “If they were to release mod tools, it would be absolutely amazing to try out the latest tech of the IW engine and the latest mod tools to see what us community members who still have passion for original Call of Duty’s can make,” the modder told VideoGamer.
While the passion is still there for many fans from the previous generation, the chances of Activision adding mod tools are slim. “Activision will never allow it again because the community will outshine them and make mods and maps that would be like original Zombies or multiplayer, taking away from their profits and the success of next year’s release.”
Will Call of Duty ever get official mod tools?
The last time Call of Duty had official mod tools was Black Ops 3. Over a decade later, fans are still creating all kinds of maps and modes continuing to offer classic gameplay with a few twists. With modders still offering alternatives to the latest annual release, there are several ways you can take a trip down memory lane.
“I want Zombies to succeed and go back to the glory days but the ship has sailed in the wrong direction,” concedes Gunoftruth. “[The release of] mod tools and developers listening to feedback to make an old-school Call of Duty can steer the ship back around.” Only time will tell if Activision and the development teams are willing to take things back to the old school. If not, the new direction is here to stay but there are countless mods and passionate modders that are carrying on supporting the games from a previous generation.
