The awesome Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies mode has stood out from multiplayer and Warzone thanks to its extensive revamp from Treyarch. With a healthy mix of features from the older Zombies maps combined with fresh innovations, there’s never been a better time to slay endless waves of the undead, but the iconic CoD game mode has started to feel stale.

BLOPS 6’s Zombies mode isn’t bad. In fact, it’s great with new wonder weapons, lengthy Easter Eggs and a great core combat, but it’s missing something. While we plod along with the official work of Treyarch, Raven and everyone else Activision has chiselling in the CoD mines, modders are reviving classic Call of Duty games with their own twists.

A decade ago, Black Ops 3 released with one of the very best Zombies modes the franchise has ever seen. Complete with excellent maps and unique Wonder Weapons, it was a true evolution of the mode that debuted in World at War. Sure, Black Ops 1 and 2 already had phenomenal Zombies mode but, over a decade later, modders are still creating a vast selection of experiences within the aging game’s fantastic framework.

Appealing to those growing tired of the latest offering, gamers who want something truly outside the box, modders such are working tirelessly, for free, on hordes of creative new maps to sink your teeth into.

“[Modding Black Ops 3 Zombies] is pretty great,” reveals Call of Duty modder Resxt. “You get the entire Zombies mode logic handed to you without doing anything such as Zombies pathing or round logic. You can actually focus on creating things most of the time.”

Resxt is responsible for creating a Zombies map inspired by the iconic sandbox game Minecraft, which features its very own main Easter Egg quest, the ability to craft items, and undead opponents that look identical to the mobs that spawn when the sun goes down.

“I always played and loved Minecraft,” says Resxt. “Call of Duty on Minecraft was always a thing for a very long time, so why not the other way around too? I think it’s a very good combination of gameplay, weapons combined with the simple and cozy atmosphere Minecraft provides.”

Catering to an older generation

In recent years, Call of Duty has joined forces with several other notable names from the world of gaming, television, and film. The likes of WWE, Fallout, and Squid Game have all appeared in Activision’s shooter series in the form of exclusive Operator skins, limited-time game modes, and more. Zombies often goes overlooked when a collaboration is live, despite it being the perfect opportunity to add some unique experiences to the mode.

The success of Resxt’s Minecraft mod shows Call of Duty can cash in on Microsoft’s vast selection of other IPs. An official Minecraft Zombies map or a themed reskin of an existing battleground has the potential to add even more variety to Black Ops 6 Zombies. It wouldn’t have to remain with Minecraft either. The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, and many more would act as perfect crossovers to create entirely new experiences that are separate from the current Dark Aether storyline.

Activision continues to beat the best-seller drum for Black Ops 6. While it keeps topping the charts, the publisher and the game’s developers must keep evolving to keep the current generation of players engaged. For those growing out of the current offering, the modding community is packed full of maps and features that keep the classic formula alive.

The perfect time for crossovers
