It appears that a Streets of Rage movie is the next video-game adaptation making its way to cinema screens.
As first reported by Deadline, Sega is said to be moving forward with the project alongside dj2 Entertainment. They’re the team behind both of the box office smash hit Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Penning the script is said to be none other than John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, according to Deadline’s sources.
It’s far from the first game-to-screen adaptation Kolstad has been attached to. We’ve previously reported that in 2017 he was attached to write a Hitman series for Hulu. Then, in 2019 he apparently wrote a script for a Just Cause movie, followed by producing a Splinter Cell anime for Netflix. At the time of writing, all three projects are yet to see the light of day but seem to be in active development.
Kolstad is also not the only John Wick filmmaker on a videogame-to-movie project. Director Chad Stahelski is also working on a Ghost of Tsushima film, which just got its own writer. That project, meanwhile, is being worked on at PlayStation Productions.
As for the Streets of Rage movie, there’s no word on anything like casting or when we can expect production to start just yet. In the world of the games, the most recent entry was Streets of Rage 4 which wasn’t developed by Sega. Rather they loaned the license out to Dotemu, who turned out a surprisingly good take on the beat-em-up brawler.
