Speculation is heating up that PlayStation could potentially be planning a showcase for the PlayStation VR2 in the near future.

That’s thanks to an email sent out by Sony over the weekend noted by industry insider Tom Henderson. A tweet of his (spotted by GamesRadar) claims the email was titled “Introducing PlayStation VR2”. As he notes, it shares similarities to one sent out a few weeks before the launch of the PlayStation 5 Showcase back in June of 2020.

While a relatively vague rumour, Henderson also notes other industry insiders have heard of such an event in the works. These include Kinda Funny Vids’ Greg Miller & Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb who have apparently both independently mentioned whispers of one on their respective shows.

It’s certainly interesting timing. We’ve not heard much on games for the new headset just yet, aside from a couple of notable exceptions. These include Horizon Call of The Mountain, which will be a VR spin-off set in Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series. Experienced VR developers of The Persistence Firesprite will be helping out on that.

Various game developers also revealed that Sony was showing off the new hardware at the Game Developers Conference last month. A fifty minute presentation called ‘Building next-gen games for PlayStation VR 2 with Unity’ was also uploaded to YouTube. Former Portal writer Chet Faliszek seemed impressed, judging on a tweet he posted from the show.

PlayStation VR2 doesn’t have a release date yet, maybe a showcase could change that too. PlayStation offered us our first look at the improved PlayStation 5 headset back in February, including screens with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 per eye.
