As if Respawn’s latest galaxy-spanning romp wasn’t already overflowing with collectibles, rumors, and a stacked main story, the developer opted to throw in the Jedi Survivor Holotactics mini-game. Channelling the likes of The Witcher’s Gwent and Horizon Forbidden West’s Machine Strike, Holotactics offers a welcome break from all the exploring and combat but rustles up a unique challenge that can test even the most strategic player’s tactical nous.Â
To help you make sense of this optional activity and nab a few wins, here’s a breakdown of Jedi Survivor Holotactics. After besting all the Holotactics opponents, consider tracking down all the Jedi Survivor Jedi Chamber locations and taking on the fearsome Jedi Survivor Spawn of Oggdo, who’s only a stone’s throw away from Pyloon’s Saloon.
How to unlock Jedi Survivor Holotactics
To unlock the Holotactics mini-game in Jedi Survivor, you’ll need to complete The Odd Pair rumor and return to Pyloon’s Saloon. The side quest takes you to the Boiling Bluff in Stone Spires on Koboh to save a pair cornered by a Mogu. From the Boiling Bluff Meditation Point, use a Nekko to jump to the ledge above, then hop across the gap to reach a platform in the middle of a large ravine where you’ll have to defeat the Mogu. Talk to the pair, and they’ll head to Pyloon’s Saloon and set up the Holotactics table in a newly-unlocked room on the second floor.
How to get more Jedi Survivor Holotactics units
To unlock new Holotactics units in Jedi Survivor, you’ll have to scan defeated enemies using BD-1. The option to scan appears after you defeat a specific type of enemy for the first time and is well worth doing, especially as you take on more formidable enemies later in the game. Their fighting abilities, health, and damage are reflected in Holotactics. For example, a B1 Droid will die in one hit and won’t cause much damage, while an AT-ST causes massive damage and can sustain damage very well, much as they would out in the wider game.
Jedi Survivor Holotactics opponents and rewards
With the Holotactics table up and running, you can take on eight Holotactics opponents of varying skill levels. These unlock progressively as you make your way through the game. Here’s a list of all the Holotactics opponents you can challenge in Pyloon’s Saloon on Koboh:
- Turgle – two-dot difficulty. Reward: Priorite Shard. Available when Holotactics unlocks.
- Greez – three-dot difficulty. Reward: Pilot Jacket. Available when Holotactics unlocks.
- Tulakt – three-dot difficulty. Reward: Anodized Metal. Available when Holotactics unlocks.
- Merrin – three-dot difficulty. Reward: Jedha Scroll. Available once Merrin leaves Jedha and heads to the Saloon.
- Caij – three-dot difficulty. Reward: Bounty puck. Available once you talk to Caij in the Devastated Settlement and unlock Bounties.
- Skoova – four-dot difficulty. Reward: Moustache. Available after completing Recruit the Mysterious Fisherman rumor.
- T-1N8 – four-dot difficulty. Reward: Datadisc. Available after completing Abandoned Shack rumor.
- Tulli – five-dot difficulty. Reward: skill point. Available once you’ve defeated all the other Holotactics opponents.
Jedi Survivor Holotactics tips
The first three Jedi Survivor Holotactics opponents – Turgle, Greez, and Tulakt – are essentially designed as an introduction and tutorial to the mini-game, so you should easily secure wins. From Merrin onwards, the difficulty cranks up and winning isn’t as straightforward. Here are a few tips:
- Remember that Battle Points carry over from one wave to the next, so don’t feel obliged to spend all your points during the first wave. The initial wave tends to be easier than subsequent ones, so it’s worth conserving a few points for a big final push in the third or fourth wave.
- Always use a mix of melee and ranged units. We recommend placing melee units closest to your opponent to shield your ranged units.
- RNG plays a huge role in the outcome of Holotactics matches. A rogue grenade could wipe out half your units in one game, but in another, the opposing unit may not even chuck a grenade at all. If you don’t win the first time but are confident in your unit selection, try again, and the result will likely be more in your favour.
- Though there’s no magic formula, having a beefy melee tank or two sided by squishy high-damage ranged units and a few cannon fodder-type melee units ups your chances of coming out on top.
- Numbers tend to win, which means having more units on the board than the enemy, regardless of their damage output or overall health, usually gives you the upper hand.
- Opponents tend to favour a specific faction – Empire, Bedlam Raiders, and Fauna. While there are no clear counters per se, Fauna units tend to falter when facing a swarm of melee units, while Bedlam Raiders don’t fare well against ranged units.
