In Zalissya, you’ll meet a Stalker who used to call the Zone home before the disaster. He stowed away a family heirloom in an old root cellar in the middle of a poppy field and wants you to retrieve it. Slight snag though: the poppy field is an anomalous area that sends people to sleep never to return, which makes retrieving the Orthodox icon tricky. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get the icon and explain what happens when you sell it to Pomor or give it to Mityay in The Poppy Field side mission.
The Poppy Field walkthrough
Before you set off, it’s worth stocking up on energy drinks – these will help keep you awake in the field. Make your way over to the mission marker on your map in the northwest of the Lesser Zone, northwest of the Pol Depot. Once there, you’ll hear a voice summoning you over to the shack to the east of the field. Head inside and talk to Pomor. For 2,000 coupons, he’ll tell you the exact location of the cellar.
If you don’t have the cash, he’ll task you with looting several bodies in the field. These are marked on the map so are easy enough to find. Run and loot as fast as you can, chugging energy drinks whenever you start to get drowsy and the screen darkens. Once you’ve looted them all, head back to Pomor and hand over the weapons and ammunition. He’ll give you the location of the cellar but also offer to take the icon off your hands in exchange for a unique weapon.
Head to the marker on the map in the northwest of the field. You’ll find a hole in the ground and a ladder leading down. Climb down, loot the body on the floor, then enter the cellar and grab the icon off the shelf on the left. Exit and get out of the poppy field as quickly as you can.
Should you give the icon to Mityay or Pomor?
Here’s what happens when you give the icon to the two NPCs:
- Pomor – You’ll get the Unknown Stalker’s AR416, a rifle with solid accuracy and a high rate of fire.
- Mityay – Heading back to Zalissya and handing over the icon to Mityay will get you 1,350 coupons.
There’s no right or wrong answer here, but we reckon the weapon is more useful in the early game compared to the coupons. If you ever grow tired of the AR416, you can sell it for a hefty haul of coupons that surpasses the 1,350 you’d receive from Mityay.
There’s also a third option: trade the icon with Pomor to get the AR416, then kill him. Loot his body to get the icon back but also a key to the backroom of his shack where you’ll find his PDA, healing items, and more useful loot. Head back to Zalyssia and give the icon to Mityay to get the 1,350 coupons. It’s a best of both worlds solution in our eyes, except for, you know, Pomor dying. But, sometimes that’s how it goes in the Zone.
