Have you ever heard the phrase “looks can be deceiving”? Well, that phrase was practically made for Smoliv and its evolutions. Introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, even though Smoliv in particular looks like a defenseless olive, the entire evolution line has some major potential for battling.

However, the one thing that can really help your Olive Pokemon shine is what nature it has. Although many players don’t know this, the nature of a Pokemon is an extremely important factor, especially if you’re a competitive Pokemon player.

If you’re wondering what nature you should go for when olive hunting in Paldea, worry not as we’re here to clear everything up.

What are Natures in Pokemon?

Now, many of you might be wondering what nature even is in Pokemon, and why it’s so important. It’s a feature that Nintendo added in Gen 3 and is basically the defining character trait of your Pokemon. What it also does is increase a specific ability by 10% all the while decreasing a different ability by the same percentage.

There are other factors of the games that are affected by the nature of your Pokemon, such as what type of food it likes and more. You can find out all about it in this ultimate Pokemon nature guide.

Modest

The modest nature increases the Pokemon’s special attack but decreases the attack stat. This makes it perfect for Pokemon that are in the party to act as one-hit special sweepers. They use their incredible special attack damage to take out the enemy in the least number of turns possible.

Smoliv’s evolution line, with its already extraordinary special attack, will benefit greatly from this nature in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. In addition, out of the three forms, none of them get any especially strong attacks that scale with the attack stat.

Quiet

Similar to the modest nature, a quiet nature Pokemon is also one that has the potential to be a special sweeper Pokemon because of its high attack stat.

The stat that gets decreased here, however, is speed. Couple that with the fact that all three forms of Smoliva already have below-average speed, and this disadvantage might be more dangerous than expected. Fortunately, trainers that have a habit of running trick room will find this disadvantage to instead be their greatest strength when using a quiet nature Arboliva.

Finding out what Nature you should go for is well and good in theory, but finding a Smoliv, Dolliv, or Arboliva with a Modest or Quiet nature isn’t easy. Fortunately, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have an item called nature mints that can help you with this problem. Find out more about what nature mints do as well as how to get nature mints.
