Before you start trying this out every time you run down the court, there’s a couple of key tips you will want to keep in mind. The first is that you need to assess the floor and see how the defenders and your teammates are spaced out. If there’s too many players around you or close to the target you’re looking to complete your flashy pass towards, it can deflect off one of the defenders and result in a costly turnover. The tricky part with using flashy passes is the unpredictability of what kind of flashy pass you’re going to dish in that given moment. So if the spacing isn’t good, it’s best to wait for a better window where you know you can execute it successfully.
The second important tip is making sure to use your left direction stick to aim with where you want to complete your flashy pass. If you aim in the wrong direction or don’t aim at all, you might throw it towards a player or target you didn’t mean to pass it to, and can give the ball up in a split second. So as you push down the court in transition or come around off a pick-and-roll play for example, make sure you’re aiming towards the player you want to send a flashy pass to otherwise it can go awry.
