1. Tap into your creativity

The best part about running with the football, is your ability to tap into all of the great moves and jukes at your disposal. Whether you choose to spin, stiff arm, hurdle, juke left or right, or maybe hit your defender with a mean dead leg juke, there’s so many different kinds of ways to evade defenders in Madden when running with the ball and you should not be shy to use them. The more you use the rushing moves you have, the more you will be able to know when and how to implement them as you make your reads on opposing defensive players.

2. Trust your blockers & maximize lanes

This is super important. If you have a good offensive line (keyword good), chances are they will be able to provide you with some great lanes to break through. However, sometimes these lanes can take a couple of seconds to open. So it’s crucial that you trust your blockers as they set up your lane, and when they do, to burst through it as fast as possible so you can zip your way past the first down, if not for a touchdown.

People that are new to football sometimes will presume that if you have a strong running back, you can run anywhere with no problem. But the fact of the matter is that your offensive line and or blockers play arguably just as important of a role as your runner does when setting up the space for you to succeed. And the best thing you can do, is to trust them and be patient. Those juicy running lanes won’t magically open by themselves.

3. Spread out defensive box with more WRs

The Defensive box? The defensive box in football is an area on the field that usually consists of the width of the defensive line and the height of five yards up from where they’re positioned. If you have too many linebackers or defensive backs in the box, and you’re trying to complete an inside run, your chances of making it past three yards on that play will be slim.

Some of you might prefer outside runs or counters so you can avoid the box all together. But if you’re big on inside runs, which sometimes consist of the best run plays, it’s best you spread out the players in the defensive box by deploying three or more wide receivers. Upon doing so, you will free up space for your runner in the box, and in turn, allow him to pick up a nice 5+ yard gain.

4. Diversify run play types & approach

For example, if you complete three straight inside runs, it won’t take long before you receive a heavy blitz package that could land you a two to three yard loss. So should you choose to run the ball often, not only mix in some outside runs, draw plays, and maybe an option play every now and then, but also take advantage of play-action pass plays because the running game opens up space for you to do just that, and successfully too.
