Is Lords of the Fallen a remake, sequel, or reboot?

Lords of the Fallen is something of a sequel and a soft reboot for the series. This game is set in the same world of Mournstead as the one from 2014, but the new Lords of the Fallen game shows Mournstead a thousand years in the future. It doesn’t necessarily directly follow the events of the first game, but it uses some of the same aspects to create this new adventure.

With this in mind, Lords of the Fallen is not a remake of the original game. The developers have kept a lot from the original but have adapted it based on feedback and criticism of the first game. The result is a change in aesthetic to a more grim-dark fantasy genre and a doubling down on the soulslike aspects of the game, especially when it comes to enemy designs and the combat which does resemble the likes of Dark Souls 3 especially.

If we had to guess, we would say you can play this game without any prior knowledge about the original release in 2014. Your custom character will be completely new and the story will be different to the original, following your avatar as one of the Dark Crusaders who is tasked with killing an ancient demonic evil.

That covers all you need to know about Lords of the Fallen being a remake, sequel, a reboot. Elsewhere, take a look at our guide on Lords of the Fallen Game Pass availability.
