Looking to recruit Flay in Jagged Alliance 3? Although there are plenty of mercenaries that you can pick up in the THQ Nordic’s and Haemimont Games’ newest entry into the series, there there are also a few more that you can actually recruit through secret means. These secret recruits can become valuable squad members if you know how to reach them.
We’ll go over how to recruit Flay in Jagged Alliance 3, one of the most popular special mercenaries you can add to your squads. If you’re still looking to hire mercs through the traditional means though, make sure you’ve got a good grip on all the Jagged Alliance 3 talents, traits, and perks in game to help you make informed choices.
How to recruit Flay
To recruit Flay, you need to begin by speaking to the leader of the poacher camp, “Hyena” Gilbert, in C4. Speak to camp leader Hyena after clearing out Legion enemies in C4, and he’ll tell you about his problems with a sharpshooter named Larry Flay, a competent shooter and former companion who has turned to killing poachers. He’ll ask you to track down and kill the man, and suggest you start by trailing the bodies he’s left in his wake.
From here you’ll need to find three poacher corpses impaled with antlers scattered around the surrounding sectors. You can find the first corpse in C6, east of the camp. The other two antler corpses are in B4, to the northwest. You may find yourself eliminating enemies in these areas if the Legion is occupying or moving through them.
After interacting with all three corpses, Flay will crawl out of the bushes to confront you. Here, you have the speak to him. You’ll need a character with a score of at least 90 in the Wisdom attribute to open up the correct dialogue options, and pass the skill check for the recruitment option. Make sure to miss the dialogue option asking about Flay’s mental state, as this will lock you out of the option to recruit him, and no positive relationship with the NPC will be able to reverse it. Pass the skill check instead, and Flay will join your crew as a mercenary.
Flay is an excellent merc to have. He’s a gifted marksman, with a sizable inventory and a powerful sniper rifle. As one of the special recruits, we doesn’t have a weekly wage that you need to pay, making him less strain on your cash. He’ll be available immediately, so no tedious wait for him to reach Ernie Island or a nearby port is required. He does however have a habit of keeping track of his kills through the use of trophies, something that your other mercs may not like. Regardless, when he’s as good as he is at handling foes from a distance, he’s a valuable specialised asset capable of rounding out any versatile team.
That covers how to recruit Flay in Jagged Alliance 3. While he might not cost you weekly upkeep, the rest of your mercs certainly will. Be sure to brush up on how to make money in Jagged Alliance 3 if you’re struggling to keep them all paid.
