Communication is key in Helldivers 2. In the heat of battle, you sometimes don’t have time to provide detailed information about what’s going on, or where you need your teammates to be. That’s where the ping system comes in – providing a far quicker way than both audio or text-based chat of letting players know what to focus on and allows for fast action should you need to pivot quickly or highlight areas of interest. Elsewhere, you’re able to mark points of interest on your minimap, and – if you’re wanting to quickly communicate with your team, there’s a comms wheel that gives you basic reponses. We’ll go through them all here.

How to ping in Helldivers 2

Pros
  • Fast way of letting team know of enemy locations and points of interest
  • Great for snipers to gauge distance
Cons
  • Only lasts six seconds
  • Some players will spam pings, which can get confusing

Whatever difficulty you play on, mastering how to ping can make the difference between life and death. To use it, simply Press the Q key on PC and R1 on PS5 to ping in Helldivers 2. If you have pinged an enemy, they will be marked with an ‘eye icon’, along with their distance, which can be useful intel should you have any ranged-weapons specialists in your team. You can also use ping to mark a location or area of interest. Whatever you ping, it’ll last six seconds before its reset. If you have pinged the wrong enemy, simply ping it again and the marker will be removed.

✓ Don’t bombard your team

There’s nothign worse than spamming a load of pings. Itll confuse your team and ultimately be pretty annoying. Only use it when there is a strong enemy, rather than trying to ping a load of weaker foes. Also, try not to ping too many spots at once as this will confuse your team.

How to mark locations in the Helldivers 2 minimap

Pros
  • Long lasting and stays until it is removed
  • Allows you to mark locations outside of immediate area
Cons
  • Take more time than pings so not useful in heat of battle

Press Tab on PC or press the touchpad on PS5 to bring up the minimap. Here, move either with your mouse or your controller stick to the location that you want to mark. Then either press the left-click on your mouse or X on your PS5 controller to drop a marker. These are permanent until you reach the specific location or remove them yourself.

You would use the mini map mark function as, unlike pings, these stick around unless they are removed by the person who placed the marker. They are also a fantastic way of designating points of interest that are outside the current field of view. Obviously, we would only recommend doing this while not under fire. If you’re in the thick of battle, opt for a ping.

Helldivers 2 comms wheel explained

Pros
  • Great at helping those without a mic feel more engaged
Cons
  • Non essential communication
  • Helldivers 2 really is better with a mic

To bring up the comms wheel, Hold R1 on PlayStation 5 or Q if you’re on PC. This gives you a number of options, allowwing you to quickly agree with orders. It’s a decent communication method if you don’t have a mic, but we would always opt for a microphone with games like Helldivers 2. That brings our communication guide to a close.
