If you want to progress to the later difficulties in Helldivers 2, as well as just generally killing those Terminids and Automatons more effectively, you’ll need to upgrade your ship – and to upgrade your ship, you need samples. That’s why we’re here to help. We’ve put together a guide to samples – explaining what they are and what are the differences between Common, Rare and Super samples. With that, let’s get into it.
All sample types in Helldivers 2
There are three types of samples in the game:
- Common samples (Green)
- Rare samples (Orange)
- Super samples (Pink)
Depending on the rarity, certain samples can only be found on certain difficulties, with the most valuable Super samples only being found on the hardest difficulties. Here’s a list of what samples can be found at each difficulty:
Difficulty Level | Available Sample Types |
---|---|
1 – Trivial | Common samples |
2 – Easy | Common samples |
3 – Medium | Common samples |
4 – Challenging | Common samples Rare samples |
5 – Hard | Common samples Rare samples |
6 – Extreme | Common samples Rare samples Super samples |
7 – Suicide Mission | Common samples Rare samples Super samples |
8 – Impossible | Common samples Rare samples Super samples |
9 – Helldive | Common samples Rare samples Super samples |
10 – Super Helldive | Common samples Rare samples Super samples |
How to get samples in Helldivers 2
All samples in the game can be collected from the map. They are most often found around various structures, nests, and points of interest (POIs). You may have to run around a bit to spot them, though they will show up as white icons when you get close enough. Always make sure to pick them up when you spot them.
If you die, you’ll immediately drop all the samples you’ve just collected. Remember to recover these from the location you died at or they’ll be lost when you complete your mission and leave.
Common samples
Common samples, as the name implies, can be found across all difficulty levels. Marked with a green circle split down the middle, you can find them represented by several in-game items:
Item | Where to find |
---|---|
Suitcases | Around human-built structures |
Small machinery | Around Automaton structures |
Alien bulb | Around Terminid nests |
Corpse worm | Around Grave POIs |
Rare samples
Rare samples start appearing from Challenging difficulty and onwards. They are marked by an orange rectangle with its lower-left quarter cut off. Here’s where you’ll most often find them:
Item | Where to find |
---|---|
Metallic crystal shards | Around all types of structures |
Purple bismuth | Close to loot containers around all structure types |
Alien flower | Near various POIs |
Undocumented Rare samples | Sometimes found in Minor POIs |
Super samples
The rarest samples of all are called Super samples, which start appearing from Extreme difficulty and up. They are represented by a pink cross-cut rectangle. Unlike other samples, Super samples are only represented as Super Uranium, a blob of floating liquid metal substance. They are always found near a Super Sample Rock – a map structure that looks like a protruding bulbous rock. It’s marked with silvery vein-like formations around its surface. There is a certain number of available Super samples on a map, based on the difficulty:
- Extreme: 2 Super samples
- Suicide Mission: 3 Super samples
- Impossible: 5 Super samples
- Helldive: 6 Super samples
- Super Helldive: 7 Super samples
Super Sample Rocks usually don’t appear during Eradicate Terminid Swarm, Eradicate Automaton Forces, and Retrieve Essential Personnel missions, so avoid these if you’re looking to farm them.
All samples found by your team will be shared across the squad. This means if one of your teammates loots some samples, you don’t have to kill them to get them, as they will automatically be rewarded to you after the match. All that matters is that the player who carries the samples successfully extracts from the mission. That way, the whole team will benefit from the collected samples. They won’t be split – everyone will get the looted amount.
Armed with this knowledge, all you have to do is prepare your loadout and arm yourself with the best weapons and stratagems to take on the highest difficulties and get those samples. And don’t forget to equip the best boosters to improve your team’s chances.
