What is a Grandmaster Nightfall?

Nightfall strikes are more challenging versions of regular PvE Vanguard operation activities, adding modifiers to the strikes that make them more difficult. There are four different difficulties you can play a Nightfall strike on. These are:

  • Heroic
  • Legendary
  • Master
  • Grandmaster

Grandmaster Nightfalls are the hardest versions of Nightfall Strikes available, throwing in a huge range of modifiers to make for a grueling gauntlet of difficulty in exchange for the best rewards. Past Grandmasters have commonly rewarded adept weapons, perfect masterworked versions of guns, including player favourites like Hung Jury, Militia’s Birthright, and Mindbender’s ambition.

Like all Nightfall strikes, they’ll be set on a weekly rotation. You can expect the strike to effect the challange of your experience in most cases, but for Grandmasters, there won’t be any you could consider easy. Any encounter from Devil’s Lair and The Arms Dealer to Lake of Shadows and The Glassway are certain to put you and your fireteam’s mastery of Bungie’s space-faring FPS to the test.

GM’s will have the largest number of modifiers out of any Nightfall, which is the key to their difficulty. While it’s impossible to know ahead of time what all the modifiers will be, there are a handful we know will make an appearance in some form. These include:

  • Champion Foes – Two types of champion foes will always appear in a Nightfall. These will be either barrier champions, overload champions, or unstoppable champions.
  • Extinguish – If all fireteam members fall in a restricted zone, the fireteam is returned to orbit, losing all previous activity progress.
  • Equipment Locked – All chosen weapons and gear are locked upon entering the activity, and cannot be changed.
  • Overcharge – A certain weapon class, such as machine guns, rocket launchers, linear fusion rifles and so on, will do an additional 25% damage.
  • Shielded Foes – Enemies will have shields, either arc, solar or void, or possibly all three.
  • Surge – A certain element or elements will do 25% additional damage. This can apply to arc, solar, stasis, strand and void.

There are far more modifiers than these that can show up in Nightfalls, including Grandmasters, but the ones above are guaranteed to make an appearance in one of Bungie’s most challenging PvE activities to date.
