Wondering about the difficulty of Granblue Fantasy: Relink? As an ARPG, Relink has a bunch of different options available to you that allow you to tweak difficulty.

While this is true for the story mode, the difficulty options mostly do not extend to multiplayer or Quest Counter missions, which may give you a hard time.

There are three main difficulty options in Granblue Fantasy: Relink: Story, Action, or Hard. Later on in the game, a new Ultimate difficulty is unlocked. The reality of the different difficulty options is that where your character would take a few hits to kill in Action mode, they will probably get downed in one hit in Hard mode.

Story mode is effectively the game’s ‘easy mode’, described as being “For players who just want to enjoy the story”. Action mode is more of a balance, but it means enemies have more HP and deal more damage. Hard mode, as you might expect, ramps up enemy HP and the damage they deal, and this is the main source of difficulty in Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Story mode is, naturally, a lot more lenient.

✓ Jack’s opinion

Hard mode is fairly artificial

In our playthrough of the game, we played on Hard mode to test the limits of what changes, and we found that it only affects how much HP an enemy has and how much damage they deal to you. If you consider this an increase in difficulty, then ramp it up to Hard and see if you enjoy it.

Multiplayer and Quest Counter difficulty

The Quest Counter lets you tackle several different challenges, such as re-fighting a boss or defeating waves of enemies. The quests at the counter range have the following difficulty options: Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Extreme, Maniac, and Proud.

These dictate how tough the quest you’re facing is and come with a recommended Power level for your characters. Outside of this, the difficulty options have no bearing at all on Multiplayer or Quest Counter missions. Quest missions have their own set difficulty, which means if you are struggling on a certain quest you can’t simply change the difficulty to help you beat it.

Skyfarer Grade difficulties

As you clear Quests on various difficulties, you naturally unlock more. These new Quests are gated behind your current Skyfarer Grade, which can be increased by completing enough missions at the counter. To begin with, you will be a Novice Skyfarer, Veteran Skyfarer, and Zegagrande Legend.

It depends on how you like to play games, and it also depends on what you consider ‘difficult’ in a game. The main challenge of Granblue Fantasy Relink is the boss fights, and the only way the game handles difficulty is by letting the enemy inflict massive damage with a hit, often resulting in one-hit kills if you don’t have good enough gear.

With enough time and patience, any boss in the game can be beaten. It’s a matter of picking the right elements for the fight you need and playing carefully. If you really struggle on Quests, you could bring a friend with you to help out via multiplayer.

What is Assist Mode in Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

Assist mode in Granblue Fantasy: Relink

Assist Mode is a difficulty option in Granblue Fantasy: Relink that dramatically changes how you play the game. With two options – Assist Mode and Full Assist Mode – you can choose to activate this feature in the Gameplay settings tab.

Assist Mode is for those who want to experience the story more than anything and don’t especially care about getting stuck into the combat. It makes the CPU effectively play the battles for you in a lot of ways. Assist Mode will let you pull off every combo in the game simply by mashing the attack button. Full Assist Mode will do everything for you, and all you have to do is move your character around while the CPU deals with anything in the way.

Assist Mode can be used during the Main Story if you play the game on Story mode. It can also be used for Quests that are marked from Easy to Extreme, and the Fate Episode missions let you use Assist Mode.
