Wondering how to play multiplayer and co-op in Genshin Impact? Genshin Impact has a multiplayer function, letting you and your friends run around together in co-op with up to four people. While in co-op, you can tackle Domains, and bosses, and explore Teyvat together.

This feature isn’t immediately unlocked at the start of the game, but you can unlock it by reaching Adventure Rank 16. With the launch of the new patch and fresh Genshin Impact 4.0 banners, you might want to explore the new area with some friends – here’s how to get to Fontaine in Genshin Impact.

How to unlock Genshin Impact co-op

To unlock the option to play Genshin Impact in multiplayer, you need to raise your Adventure Rank to 16. Adventure Rank essentially dictates what content you can tackle and the higher this rank gets, the more the game opens up.

Both you and your friends you want to play with need to be Adventure Rank 16 or higher. Once you hit this level, you can start adding your friends using your unique UID code you can see at the bottom of your screen. Give this string of numbers to your friends or enter your friends’ UID from the Friends section of the Pause menu. Once you’re friends, you can invite them to your world and start adventuring together.

After you send an invite to your friend to join your world or accept a join request from them, you will enter your friend’s world or they will come to yours. As mentioned, you can invite four friends to play Genshin Impact multiplayer in one world together, with each person using one character from their personal roster.

Genshin Impact multiplayer could be improved

If you’ve played co-op Genshin before, you might find it severly lacking in many ways. It is limited to a frustrating amount, removing any real drive for you to want to explore a friend’s world together, since progress only happens for the host. Furthermore, you can’t interact with unopened Statues of the Seven while in co-op, meaning map areas will remain locked. The best part of Genshin multiplayer is fighting bosses and grinding Artifacts together.

Genshin Impact multiplayer explained

It’s important to note that Genshin Impact multiplayer is somewhat lacking in a lot of ways. You can’t do any main story quests together in co-op mode, nor can you do most of the important World Quests. If your friends join your world, they won’t be able to open any chests they find in your world, which is a painful limitation.

This means that progress for exploration will only apply to the person who is hosting. While the entire world of Genshin Impact is explorable in co-op mode, the fact the other people playing can’t interact with the world is a bummer.

Despite the limitations, there are plenty of things you can do with your friends in Genshin while in co-op, such as:

  • Daily Commissions
  • Challenge Domains for Artifacts, Talent Books, and Weapon Ascension materials
  • Challenge world bosses and weekly bosses
  • Some events let you play together in multiplayer

Why should I bother with Genshin Impact multiplayer?

A lot of the bosses in Genshin Impact will reward you with achievements if you beat them in multiplayer, so this is a great way to get some Primogems in a pinch. Plus, it’s a way to experience the game different with your friends, even if you can’t properly explore together you can hang out in the beautiful environments.

Does Genshin Impact have crossplay?

Genshin Impact does have crossplay and it works wonderfully. As of patch 4.0, Genshin Impact is available on PC, Mobile, and PS4/PS5. Players on any of these platforms can play together through crossplay without any issues.
