Items are useful objects you can pick up in Behaviour Interactive’s asymmetric survival horror game. Ranging in rarity and usefulness, there’s sometimes a good reason or two to let go of items you might’ve been holding onto. But how do you do it? Here, we’ll walk you through how to drop items in Dead by Daylight, and explain the reasons and circumstances in which you might want to do so.
How to drop an item in Dead by Daylight
To drop an item on the controller, press the B/Circle button for Playstation or Xbox, or the R key on the mouse and keyboard if you’re on PC. This will drop whatever item you currently have equipped. It will fall onto the floor, and other Survivors will then be able to pick it up. To drop another item, just equip it from your inventory and repeat the process. You can drop items regardless of whether you’re running, walking, or crawling, though you won’t be able to do so if you’re in the middle of another interaction like freeing yourself from a hook, healing, or fixing a generator.
Why drop items in Dead by Daylight?
There are a couple of good reasons you may want to drop items anyway though. Only being able to carry one item, you might want to replace it with a different, more useful one. In addition, there are different item rarities, and you’ll likely want to prioritise using Ultra Rare items over lesser ones.
A more important reason is teamwork. As a Survivor, it goes without saying that you’ll want to work with other Survivors to escape the Trial and avoid being sacrificed. Items are a boon to this end, with objects like the Flashlight, Toolbox, and Med Kit granting essential bonuses to explore, repair, and recover. If your team has an abundance of such items – or if there’s a good strategy involved – it might be sensible to drop items that would be better used by your teammates. Another reason could be unwanted redundancy – dropping an item that your team already has and you won’t need more of.
This can make even more sense if you’re about to die, as your friends will be unable to claim items that were on you if you’re killed. Dropping the item if you’re being chased and are under imminent threat of a gruesome fate at least opens up the potential for your fellow Survivors to fare better and win the match.
How to get items in Dead by Daylight
There are really two ways you can get items in DBD. Either you can find them in chests around the map during matches, or you can unlock items by spending Bloodpoints in the Bloodweb in between matches. You can then equip unlocked items to bring with you in your next match. This is usually the way to go if you’re aiming to get your hands on rarer and more powerful items.
