Chinese action game Black Myth: Wukong is one of the biggest successes of the year. Alongside breaking record player numbers on Steam, the new hack-and-slash title has caused PS5 consoles to sell out in China.
Black Myth: Wukong sells out PS5s
Based on the Chinese literary epic Journey to the West, Game Science’s AAA adaptation of the novel has proven massively popular in China. As a result, the game’s release has caused PS5 consoles to sell out in the region.
Games analyst Daniel Camilo reported a “contagious wave” of PS5 sales in China. The game’s launch has also caused a huge surge in sales of pre-built PCs and components such as GPUs.
“At Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen, [the] world’s largest electronic market, it is now clear that sales are extraordinarily high, driven by Wukong,” Camilo said.
“Retail commerce for gaming in China is almost nonexistent. It’s mostly through e-commerce platforms,” they continued. “Even sellers with physical stores (such as those in Huaqiangbei) also have digital storefronts where most of their business actually happens.”
Due to the sheer rise in demand, stores in China are planning to increase the price of PS5 consoles from 2,000 Yuan to 4,000 Yuan depending on the model.
A huge win for China
While many see the Chinese games industry as a hub for free-to-play gacha games, Black Myth: Wukong proves China can see success from huge single-player games. With Black Myth as a blueprint, we could start seeing more AAA experiences coming out of China.
