Should you trust Elminster in Baldur’s Gate 3? This bearded man appears on the Mountain Pass and claims to be an associate of Gale’s. Is there a bit of trickery afoot here or is there nothing to worry about? It could be the Absolute trying to mess with your head more than they have already. Yet for those familiar with the Forgotten Realms lore, the arrival of Elminster himself is a very special treat. The question remains – is he trustworthy?
Who is Elminster Aumar in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Elminster Aumar is the powerful Sage of Shadowdale – a returning character from the previous Baldur’s Gate titles and the larger Forgotten Realms lore. He is a powerful wizard who appeared in both Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2. Those who have played the previous games will recognize him as a helpful ally and companion. He has also appeared in multiple Dungeons & Dragons books over the years.

Should you trust Elminster in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes, Elminster Aumar can be trusted in Baldur’s Gate 3. He is an ally to Gale and helps progress Gale’s companion quest. Elminster was sent by the goddess Mystra to help Gale on his quest by removing his need to consume magic items. Instead, Elminster relieves Gale of his curse and turns the orb into a bomb that he can control. After meeting with Elminster, Gale gains the ability to use this bomb to destroy the Absolute should you choose to bring him with you to the end of the game.
Should you decide to take Elminster Aumar’s offer, Gale’s curse will be lifted. If you decide to ignore Elminster’s offer, he will go away and Gale will remain cursed. Gale has a motive to get the curse lifted so it is in his best interest for you to agree to Elminster’s offer before moving on to the next area and meeting the Harpers.
When you reach the end of the game, you can use the bomb inside Gale to destroy everything including the Absolute. Of course, this comes with the price of Gale and all nearby companions biting the dust as well. Think carefully before using this powerful magic orb.
You can also use the bomb at any earlier point of the game. After decimating your party (and hopefully your enemies), any survivors can resurrect the others. However, Gale will be gone for good.
Where do you find Elminster in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Elminster Aumar can be found in the Mountain Pass section of the campaign known as the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. After entering this area, you will need to deal with some ghouls. Follow the path you would normally take to reach the Shadow-Cursed Lands. This renowned wizard can be found near the stone bridge leading to the entrance of the Shadowlands.
