Tieflings are one of the most popular races in Baldur’s Gate 3. Their Darkvision lets them see in the dark, while Hellish Resistance lets them take reduced fire damage. While all classes can benefit from this, certain classes work better with the Tiefling race and their various subraces. We’ve listed our favourite picks down below.

Best Tiefling classes and subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3

Tieflings in Baldur’s Gate 3 come in three subraces – Asmodeus Tiefling, Mephistopheles Tiefling, and Zariel Tiefling. These offer the Produce Flame cantrip, Mage Hand cantrip, and the Thaumaturgy cantrip respectively. Picking the right class could let you make the most of these abilities.

Pairing the Tiefling race with the right class in Baldur’s Gate 3 will let you use the best weapons, spells, and abilities together in an optimal manner. You’ll need a strong character to take on the many challenges of Faerun, both in and outside of combat. We recommend the following five race-class combinations for the Tieflings in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Zariel Tiefling Oathbreaker Paladin
  • Asmodeus Tiefling Fiend Warlock
  • Zariel Tiefling Berserker Barbarian
  • Mephistopheles Tiefling Thief Rogue
  • Zariel Tiefling College of Swords Bard

Zariel Tiefling Oathbreaker Paladin

Fire resistance is great for frontline fighters. And Paladins excel at it thanks to their defensive abilities and high health. And with Thaumaturgy, they can use intimidation against enemy threats. While Paladins can pick from Ancients, Devotion, Vengeance, and Oathbreaker subclasses, I prefer the Oathbreaker for its sheer damage potential, which can eclipse even the Vengeance subclass. It would also combine well with the Tiefling’s Darkvision in the Underdark sections of the game.

Asmodeus Tiefling Fiend Warlock

The Mephistopheles and Asmodeus subraces are good for magic casters thanks to their cantrips. Since their racial spells also use charisma, a high Charisma character will let you buff these spells. Warlocks are solid offensive picks thanks to their powerful spells and subclass variety. They can pick from Archfey, The Fiend, and The Great One. The Fiend subclass has Dark One’s Blessing that grants temporary health when killing enemies, making them sturdy allies in combat.

Respec your character and experiment with multiple strategies

You may find that another subclass and their abilities are more suited to how you approach BG3.

Zariel Tiefling Berserker Barbarian

Karlach is a great example of a strong Zariel Tiefling Barbarian. Since their rage attacks require you to push your offensive, fire resistance is a great perk to have. And Thaumaturgy helps with all your Intimidation checks. There are three potential subclass options for the Barbarian – Berserker, Wildheart, and Wild Magic. Frenzied Strike and Enraged Throw are good offensive skills so I recommend the Berserker.

Mephistopheles Tiefling Thief Rogue

Thanks to Mage Hand, you don’t need to resort to the Arcane Tricker Rogue subclass as a Tiefling. Instead, you can pick from the lethal Assassin and Thief subclasses. Sneak attacks are great in the dark thanks to the Tiefling’s natural Darkvision perk too. I’d pick the Thief as its additional bonus action can be used to get out of tricky situations.

Zariel Tiefling College of Swords Bard

The Bard is a versatile class that focuses on getting out of situations with Charisma. And as a weaker class when it comes to damage output, starting spells are great at offsetting this weakness. Fire resistance is again a helpful perk. As for subclasses, you get to pick between the College of Lore, Valor, and Swords. If you like getting into combat, consider the College of Swords.
