Guns, spell casting, companions, and the Pillars of Eternity universe – there’s a lot to look forward to in Obsidian’s latest RPG. Obsidian is primarily known for crafting beloved and extremely intricate single-player RPGs with Fallout New Vegas, The Outer Worlds, and Pillars of Eternity sitting proudly in the studios’ back catalog. Nevertheless, there are questions around whether Avowed features multiplayer or co-op.
The short answer is no, Avowed is through-and-through a single player experience. In this guide, we’ll give you a quick run-through of why Avowed is sidestepping multiplayer to offer players a lone wolf journey through the Living Lands in the world of Eora.
Can you play Avowed in co-op or multiplayer?
No, ever since the game was first confirmed and announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020, it has consistently been described as a purely single player experience with a heavy focus on story and a elaborate and flexible combat system. However, Avowed was at one point pitched as a co-op game, but Obsidian switched lanes during development as it aimed to focus on what it does best, an Obsidian game – a deep and rich RPG experience with compelling characters and storytelling.
Though you’ll be jumping in alone, you’ll be accompanied by a cast of companions that play an integral part in the story that unfolds. They’ll be at the core of the experience, aiding you in battle but also helping you navigate the Living Lands and offer their thoughts on decisions and choices made as you play.
While there’s always the possibility of a post-launch update to integrate some form of multiplayer or co-op functionality, it is highly unlikely and it’s safe to assume that Avowed will remain forever a single player game. But, with a release on PC and Game Pass alongside Xbox consoles, we can’t discount modders swooping in post-launch to piece together a multiplayer mod that will allow you to jump in with friends. This won’t be official or get the nod from Obsidian, but it is our best chance for any sort of multiplayer component.
