Struggling to track quests in Assassin’s Creed Shadows? In an effort to promote exploration and an immersive experience, the quest tracking system is, let’s say, unconventional. Or, at least, it is if you opted to turn off the Guided Exploration toggle when launching a new game. We struggled with the system when starting the game for our review.

Instead of simply appearing on the map like in most open-world games, there are a couple of steps involved before a quest marker will appear on the map and on the compass HUD. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to track quests in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows quest tracking explained

To track a quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’ll first need to bring up the pause menu and cycle through to the Objectives tab. Find the quest you want to track on the Objectives Board, then hover over the white diamond icon below the quest giver or assassination target. Tap X on PS5, A on Xbox, or Space Bar on PC to track the quest. The diamond icon will turn blue to signal that the quest is being tracked.

Next, head to the map in the World tab. In the top left, you’ll see several clues related to the tracked quest. For example, in the image below we’re tracking the An Evening in Otsu quest. Per the clues, we’re looking for a shrine maiden in the province of Omi. She is somewhere in the western Mouth of Seta sub-region and in the Otsu Upper District.

Find the rough location alluded to on the map and hover over it. Tap Square on PS5, X on Xbox, or F on PC to scout the objective. Tap X on PS5, A on Xbox, and Space bar on PC to dispatch the scouts. If you’re in the right location, a new blue diamond quest marker will appear on the map pointing to where you need to go to progress the quest. The diamond will now also appear on the HUD compass at the top of the screen.
