The Prince of Persia The Sands of Time remake is rumored to be nearing release, with an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake potentially following not long after. Ubisoft has not provided an update on Sands of Time since delaying the project indefinitely in February 2021, while the Black Flag remake has yet to be officially announced despite multiple leaks. That said, new signs of activity have recently surfaced for both titles.
As spotted by Assassin’s Creed fan account Zephryss on X, registered domains for the Prince of Persia The Sands of Time remake website across multiple regions have been updated individually. A screenshot shared by the account shows the UK domain was updated on January 12, suggesting an announcement may be approaching.
Earlier this month, we reported that Ubisoft updated the Sands of Time remake domain on December 11, 2025, despite the game not appearing at The Game Awards. The domain is registered through Gandi.net, a France-based domain registrar commonly used by Ubisoft.
Separate screenshots also show that the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced domain was also updated on January 12. A previous PEGI listing suggested the remake carries the title Black Flag Resynced, though Ubisoft has not officially confirmed the project.
Prince of Persia The Sands of Time remake is rumored to release in January
According to Insider Gaming reporter Mike Straw, the Sands of Time remake is “scheduled to release in mid-January 2026”. Those plans may have shifted, as the game did not appear at The Game Awards 2025 despite rumors it would.
Ubisoft has not shown new footage of the remake since its initial reveal in 2020. If the rumored mid-January release window is accurate, the game could potentially launch as a shadow drop, releasing the same day it is formally announced with minimal marketing.
Shadow drops are rare, but there have been high-profile examples, such as the shadow drop of The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered in 2025. There were several leaks about Bethesda’s remaster, including screenshots of gameplay and box art, but Bethesda didn’t confirm the remaster’s existence until they released it on April 22, 2025.
Ubisoft’s only instance of a shadow drop for the Prince of Persia series was the surprise simultaneous launch of the Rogue Prince of Persia for PC and consoles as a bonus addition for PS Plus Extra in August 2025.
The Sands of Time remake was originally planned to release on January 21, 2021. Development was initially handled by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, but the project drew criticism for its visuals, with the reveal trailer in September 2020 receiving significantly more dislikes.
In 2023, Ubisoft transferred development to Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind the original 2003 classic for the PlayStation 2. The original game is widely regarded as one of the strongest entries in the franchise, which spans over 35 years, and it tells the story of a young prince who teams up with a princess to undo his mistake of releasing the Sands of Time, unintentionally turning people into monsters.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake is rumored to release in March
According to Insider Gaming back in November 2025, the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake is expected to release before March 31, with March 23 cited as a possible date.
Originally released in 2013 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag stars Edward Kenway and is set during the Golden Age of Piracy. The game is best known for introducing naval combat mechanics that were later expanded in titles such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Jeux Vidéo Magazine, a French YouTuber with a track record of accurate Assassin’s Creed leaks, claims that the remake removes the modern-day storyline in favor of expanded content focused on Edward. He also suggests that the remake adopts an RPG-style system featuring loot and gear statistics, as seen in Assassin’s Creed installments Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows.
Although Black Flag is the sixth game released, its story is positioned tenth in the series’ chronological timeline. It takes place well after Odyssey, so perhaps we can get an Easter Egg for Odyssey’s leading lady, Kassandra, seeing as she’s an immortal being brought back in Valhalla who also received an Easter Egg in the form of a bronze statue in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
