Have you ever wondered what GPU is equivalent to Xbox One? Even though it feels like only yesterday that the Xbox One stole the show from the Xbox 360, this console has actually been around for over ten years. However, that doesn’t mean it’s passed its shelf life (I still use my Xbox One). While it may not be as powerful as some of the GPUs released more recently, like the RTX 4080 Super for instance, games are still being made for the Xbox One and titles are still seeing updates to incorporate this middle-aged machine.

We’ve already covered what GPU is equivalent to Xbox Series X and what GPU is equivalent to PlayStation 5 if you’re considering a GPU or a more modern console, and we’ve even talked about what GPU is equivalent to PS4, if you’re still holding onto the older generation – like me. Let’s get into it.

Xbox One graphics card

The Xbox One uses an AMD-built GPU that is referred to as the Durango graphics processor. The Xbox One S uses a Durango 2 GPU. This particular GPU has a process size of 28nm and features GCN 1.0 architecture (which was launched in 2012), and supports up to DirectX 11.2 It comes equipped with 8GB of DDR3 VRAM, a 256-bit memory bus and a memory bandwidth of 68.22 GB/s, the Xbox One’s GPU has a clock speed of 853 MHz and a power consumption of 95 W. So when finding an equivalent graphics card, we’ve kept those specs in mind.

What graphics cards are equivalent to Xbox One?

In terms of mimicking the capabilities of the Xbox One, the graphics card that comes closest is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 750. Though we would not recommend this as a viable GPU, unless you really wanted to relive the graphics of the early 2010s, as this February marks ten years since its launch in 2014. The GTX 750 is a mid-range graphics card that has an MSRP of about $114, which may be an appealing price tag when you consider the rising prices of modern GPUs, but should definitely be considered a reflection of its performance when running contemporary games. Yes, it does have a lower power consumption (55 W) and a faster core clock speed (1020 MHz) than the Xbox One, but this graphics card only has a comparatively low 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM and only a 128-bit memory bus. On paper, the Xbox One actually looks better, with more VRAM, a higher texture fill rate and 200 more GFLOPS than the GTX 750.

So if we’re not recommending a graphics card entering retirement, what are we suggesting? For a graphics card that is an upgrade on the decade-old hardware of the Xbox One, but isn’t overkill, we would suggest the RX 6600 XT.

Coming in cheaper than the Xbox One, with an MSRP of $379, the RX 6600 XT features newer AMD architecture than the Xbox One. Built on RDNA 2 (which was launched in 2020) this graphics card is not the most up-to-date, as newer models feature RDNA 3.0, but it is definitely a more modern choice if you’re looking to buy a newer graphics card. Equipped with nearly 1300 more CUDA cores, the 6600 XT has a substantially faster clock speed of 1968 MHz, with a boost clock speed of 2589 MHz. With 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and a memory bandwidth of 256 GB/s, this graphics card performs well at 1080p and fantastically at 1440p, when we compared the AMD RX 7600 Vs RX 6600 XT, and the RX 6600 XT scored high refresh rates of up to 139fps according to Digital Trend’s RX 6600 XT review.

Final thoughts

At $130 less than the Xbox One’s MSRP, AMD’s RX 6600 XT graphics card may actually make it more cost effective to upgrade your PC’s graphics card, rather than buying a pre-built console. It out scores the Xbox One in terms of graphics, offers more longevity since it is 2 years old, and is a robust, mid-range graphics card to enhance your gaming experience without costing an arm and a leg.

That being said, if you are on a budget and don’t know whether to undertake the construction of a PC, the costs will mount up, so it may be better suited to your spending limit right now to buy a console that doesn’t require future purchases of other (expensive) hardware and manual labor. While the Xbox One is older, and not a graphical powerhouse, it is still a robust console that can comfortably handle 1440p gameplay.
