If you’re experiencing Sons of the Forest stuttering, then you are certainly not alone. We’ve got a few potential fixes here.

Sons of the Forest is now out on pre-release, and already people are experiencing stuttering and frame drops in the expansive and GPU-intensive game. This is all fairly standard for a pre-release. In fact, finding issues such as these are a large part of the point of running a pre-release, as it means that they can be ironed out before the full game comes out.

In fact many for every person complaining of stuttering in the new game, there are more comments on how smooth it is running. This doesn’t stop it from being really annoying if it happens to you though, so we’ve listed a few potential fixes.

How to fix Sons of the Forest stuttering

There are a few things that often cause frame drops in games and we’ve listed some common troubleshooting methods below, as well as some more specific advice for Sons of the Forrest, though this is based on anecdotal advice.

If the stutter issues prove consistent and widespread it will likely mean it is an issue with the game itself and its optimization, and the developers will be working hard to sort it out. This is all pretty common and understandable for a pre-release.

Check Sons of The Forrest System Requirements

The most obvious and common reason for low or inconsistent frame rates comes from pushing your rig further than it is capable of. Sons of the Forrest is a demanding game so it could be that you are simply playing on higher settings than may be feasible, at least for now.

The minimum requirements are as follows:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • Processor: INTEL CORE I5-8400 or AMD RYZEN 3 3300X
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB or AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 20 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: SSD (Preferred)

This is what is needed to play the game on the lowest settings. Try closing all unnecessary applications running on your computer, and lowering your settings and see if the issues persist.

One of the key features here is the preferred SSD.

SSD is a kind of internal memory that is much faster than HDD. Fast access to memory is vital for gaming. This will mainly affect load times, it is possible that an HDD drive could contribute to poor performance in Sons of the Forrest.

Update GPU drivers

Playing with old GPU drivers is a surefire way to run into performance issues. It’s always worth checking you are fully up to day, especially if you are running into stuttering issues in the game.

You can check the latest drivers for both AMD and Nvidia GPUs using one of the links below:

Verify the game files on Steam

Another common issue which can cause stuttering is playing on a game that has files that are either missing or corrupted. The good news is that there is an easy check for this.

Simply go to your Steam library and right-click on Sons of the Forest. From there go to Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game files.

Steam will then make sure you have all the necessary game files. Once the check is complete restart your PC.

Disable DLSS

Many of the people reporting stuttering issues in Sons of the Forest noted that disabling DLSS seemed to fix the issue. This is, of course, anecdotal but if nothing has worked so far it is certainly worth a shot.

If this does prove to be the issue you can be confident the developers will release a fix allowing players to play stutter-free with DLSS enabled,
