Instagram’s Twitter killer has launched on Android and Apple, but is there a Threads web version?

Elon Musk isn’t a happy bunny right now. The launch of Instagram Threads has seen over 30 million new signups according to Zuck via Threads in the first morning after the launch. Things seem to be pretty smooth sailing for Zuck, though users want to know if the app will be available on macOS and Windows. The short answer is kind of but not really. We’ve covered how to use Threads on desktop and PC, but it’s definitely not official just yet. The request comes alongside a host of features so far lacking on the Threads app. Users or Threaders if that’s the right term, want to know how to upload a GIF and when hashtags will work. There’s also a lack of a trending feature as of yet.

Does Threads have a desktop version?

At the time of writing, Threads does not yet have a desktop version where you can log in and post threads. However, you can view Threads profiles. We’ve even got ourselves one if you’re a fan of videogames. Misleadingly, there’s the option to interact with posts on desktop, but when you click the heart symbol, you’re prompted with a QR code to join Threads. As Zuckerberg has outlined via Threads, it looks like the Meta team is working on “basic capabilities” this morning. In the meantime, you should just download Threads and make sure you know how to follow everyone in these early days.

Final word

This page will be updated as soon as we hear about a desktop app for Threads. In the meantime, there’s plenty more to be familiarising yourself with Threads. It’s worth cluing yourself up on what the Fediverse is, because that whole concept is going to take some getting used to! Though it’s likely you’ve already signed away your data, it’s also worth cluing yourself up about the EU’s data privacy concerns, and why Threads isn’t available in the EU just yet, along with lots of other countries.

Frequently asked questions

Will Threads have a desktop app?

There’s been no official confirmation, but it would definitely be weird if Threads didn’t get a desktop app in the future considering it’s a pretty big platform. While it’s probably not a priority for now, we’re hoping to see a Threads desktop app in the future.
