Nvidia’s recent release of their 8GB 4060 Ti graphics card has caused a stir, and many gamers are understandably asking – Is the RTX 4060 Ti futureproof? To go a step further, you might ask whether the 4060 Ti is enough in 2023.

Taking center stage is the highly limiting 8GB of VRAM issue. Despite the 4060 Ti is the most affordable card of the 40-series, getting you next-gen features like DLSS 3.0 and a much more power-efficient card. However, these features only go so far when the 8GB of VRAM is hardly enough for PC gaming. So, whether or not you think the 4060 Ti is futureproof will depend on how much value you put on its strengths and weaknesses.

In our review roundup of the 4060 Ti, we found much of the opinion revolved around this 8GB VRAM issue. To be precise though, the limiting factor is really the GPU’s memory bus. Although the 8GB of GGDR6 is locked on at 16GBps, it’s across a 128-bit bus which gives you a bandwidth of 288GB/s. This matters if you’re gaming at higher resolutions like 1440p or 4K. So, it’s not that the 4060 Ti performs unacceptably at 1440p, but it’s definitely limited. Considering not all games have DLSS 3.0 either mean you could be stuck playing on lower game settings when you’re relying on the card’s raw performance.

Why isn’t the RTX 4060 Ti futureproof?

The sad and exciting truth is that next-gen games are increasingly taxing on GPUs. It explains the need for next-gen features like DLSS 3.0 which help gaming rigs maintain the frame rates, but then why skip out on more VRAM? Popular games like Jedi Survivor and Last of Us had a lion’s share of PC performance issues. Most of us have seen first hand the need for better memory implementations.

Part of the issue could be the rise of crossplay games in 2023. It means games like Last of Us are primarily targeting consoles that enjoy more VRAM and better optimisation. In our comparison of PS5 vs 4060 Ti, it’s clear that the PS5 flies with 16GB VRAM and a 256-bit memory bus meaning you can easily game in 4K.

So when you add consoles and cross-play in the mix, the expectation that newer games will come out geared for a speculated PlayStation 6 will probably make things harder for the 4060 Ti to keep up further down the line. With this in mind, the 4060 Ti might not be worth it if you want to keep up with the latest games.
